Double Hung Windows installed on Brisbane home

Double hung windows have two sashes in a single frame, with both sashes able to slide up or down independently to provide ventilation and tilt-in for easy cleaning.

Double Hung Windows FAQs

Double-hung windows are a type of window that feature two separate panels, known as sashes. These sashes are mounted vertically within the window frame. In double-hung windows, both of these sashes can move up and down independently of each other. This design allows you to open the window from the bottom by raising the lower sash, from the top by lowering the upper sash, or you can open both sashes at the same time to allow air to enter from both the top and the bottom of the window. This provides flexible ventilation options and makes double-hung windows a popular choice for many homes.

While double hung windows are adaptable to most spaces, they shine best in areas where ventilation, light, and traditional aesthetic are important. Some of our favourite places to install double-hung windows in Brisbane and Gold Coast spaces include:

  • Bedrooms: They provide excellent ventilation and can be equipped with screens to keep insects out while allowing fresh air in. The ability to open the top sash only can also provide ventilation while maintaining privacy and security.

  • Bathrooms: Similar to bedrooms, the ventilation capabilities are ideal for bathrooms, helping to expel moisture and reduce condensation, with the added benefit of maintaining privacy when the top sash is opened.

  • Living Rooms and Family Rooms: Double hung windows can be large, allowing for ample natural light and air flow, enhancing the comfort of common living spaces.

  • Kitchens: They provide good ventilation, which is essential in a kitchen for removing cooking odors and heat. The ability to open the top sash helps in keeping the area ventilated without disturbing anything placed on the kitchen counters.

There are very few spaces double-hung windows don’t work in maximising light and ventilation. In saying that, they might be less ideal in locations where they could be difficult to reach the window to slide it up and down, such as over wide benchtops or high on a wall.

Typically, a well-made double-hung window from a reputable manufacturer, properly installed and maintained, can be expected to last for many, many years. Some high-quality windows can last even longer, especially if they are well cared for and in a favourable environment.

Some of the things that can encourage double-hung windows to enjoy a longer lifespan include:

  • Material: Double-hung windows can be made from different materials such as wood, vinyl, aluminum, or fiberglass. Each material has a different durability level and maintenance requirement. For example, vinyl windows may last longer than wood windows because they are more resistant to rot and require less care.

  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance can extend the life of double-hung windows. This includes cleaning the frames and glass, checking for and repairing any damage, and ensuring that the moving parts are lubricated and functioning correctly.

  • Environmental Conditions: Windows exposed to harsh weather conditions, such as the extreme heat we experience in Brisbane, cold, or coastal salt air on the Gold Coast, may have a shorter lifespan due to increased wear and tear.

If you’re unsure of the lifespan to expect on double-hung windows in your space, please feel free to contact us. We’re familiar with all types of glass we work with and can walk through its life expectancy and how to care for them.

Safety glass is a product that is designed to cause minimal injury when it breaks, compared to regular annealed glass. The two most commonly used safety glass products are laminated glass and toughened/tempered glass. Both products have very different and distinct features that provide various levels of safety and security.

Yes, however, the entire panel of glass will usually need to be replaced. We recommend replacing these panels with toughened glass as the hole required for the pet door makes the glass weak. Toughened glass alleviates this issue.

Laminated glass is two pieces of glass laminated together with an interlayer. When it breaks, it cracks but holds together, like a windscreen. Toughened glass is just one panel, but has undergone a process to make it 4-5 times stronger than normal glass. When it breaks, it shatters into thousands of small pieces the size of a fingernail.

Sometimes toughened glass will shatter instantaneously, without an apparent reason. This is often due to a small flaw within the glass itself from manufacture. If the flaw is present, the glass failure could happen at any time.

In the case of a glass emergency, we will attend the same day and can usually complete the repair on the first visit.
