Memory in the Making: True Blue Glass Leads by Example During Dementia Action Week

This Dementia Action Week (15–21 September 2025), Loganholme-based glazing and glass repair business True Blue Glass is shining a spotlight on what it means to be a truly dementia-friendly workplace.

The movement was sparked by founder Bill Leavey’s dementia diagnosis earlier this year. What began as a deeply personal journey has since become the driving force behind the company’s commitment to making its workplace and its customer service more inclusive and supportive.

Now an advocate for dementia awareness, Bill is using his voice to change perceptions, reduce stigma and encourage other businesses to take simple, meaningful steps that make a difference.

“I built this business from a ute and some printed flyers in 2006. Today, I can’t read a tape measure properly or remember what someone said 10 minutes ago,” Bill said.

“But that doesn’t mean I can’t contribute. That’s what I want people to understand.”

Bill’s determination has already inspired change. Since his diagnosis, he has:

  • Established a peer-support group for people living with dementia.
  • Spoken at Dementia Australia community events to raise awareness and reduce stigma.
  • Partnered with local businesses, including delivering training for staff at a Mudgeeraba shopping centre to better support customers showing signs of memory loss or confusion.

Within True Blue Glass, his journey has reshaped company culture. The business has implemented dementia-awareness training for all staff, and developed customer communication protocols that prioritise empathy, patience and care, especially when working with older clients.

CEO Sean Leavey, Bill’s son, said the changes have already made a noticeable impact.

“We visit people’s homes every day. We now have more understanding that a customer who forgets why we’re there, or seems upset, may be dealing with more than just a broken window,” Sean said.

“Dad’s story has opened our eyes and shaped how we train our team to show respect and understanding, not just complete a job.”

Bill admits that some days are harder than others, but he remains committed to advocacy. For Bill, it’s about more than his own diagnosis.

“This is about treating people like you’d treat your own grandparents – with kindness and clarity. We might not be able to stop dementia, but we can absolutely stop the stigma,” Bill said.

As Dementia Action Week calls on Australians to create more supportive communities for people living with dementia, True Blue Glass hopes that their example encourages other trade and service businesses to make small but meaningful changes.

Dementia in Australia: Why Every Business Should Pay Attention

In 2025, 433,300 Australians are living with dementia. Without a breakthrough, this number is projected to rise to 812,500 by 2054 — a 93% increase over the next 30 years, outpacing most other chronic conditions.

For trade-based businesses like True Blue Glass — where technicians regularly visit customers’ homes, including elderly or vulnerable individuals — the implications are significant. Interactions with clients who may be living with memory loss or confusion are not uncommon, and without awareness, these moments can create misunderstanding, distress, or even risk.

That’s why True Blue Glass is proud to lead change in the industry by formally committing to becoming a dementia-friendly workplace. This commitment aligns with the company’s core values of people and community — and at the heart of it all is the personal journey of founder Bill Leavey.
